Our History & Campus

Our History: Growth and Development

VIS is located on the scenic island of Malta, nestled in the central Mediterranean, halfway between Italy and North Africa. The school currently resides in the coastal area of Pembroke, just west of Malta’s capital, Valletta. Initially established in 1976 by an American oil company as a day school for the children of expatriate families, VIS was originally situated in a different part of the island. It later moved to its present location in Pembroke, within Fort Pembroke, which was built in 1582 and named after French Grandmaster de Verdala, leader of the Order of the Knights of St John. Over the years, VIS has evolved from its American educational roots to become a truly international school, recently adopting the IB curriculum and reviewing our statutes to better reflect our global ethos. Today, the school has grown to accommodate over 560 students, fostering a diverse and dynamic learning environment.

Our Campus: Unified and Expanding

All of VIS's School sections are conveniently situated on one expansive site in Pembroke. This includes the High School, housed in the main fort; the Middle School, located just across the road from the main fort; and the Elementary School, which connects to the Middle School via the basketball court and football pitch. This setup not only facilitates a seamless transition between different educational stages but also strengthens the sense of community among students and staff.

Exciting Developments: The New Build

Scheduled for completion in August 2025, our ambitious new building project will further enhance our campus. This eco-forward development is set to house the Early Years and Kindergarten programmes, providing them with state-of-the-art facilities tailored to young learners' needs. Additionally, the new build will become the home for the administrative block, which is currently located in the High School. This expansion reflects our dedication to improving and adapting our facilities to meet the growing needs of our community while also enriching the learning experience for all students.
